Quick rates
Standard rates as commonly published. Rates change and some goods are taxed differently, so confirm with your tax authority.
Enter an amount and a rate.
How to use it
Choose add or remove
Pick add to turn a price excluding GST into one including it, or remove to split a GST-inclusive total.
Enter the amount and rate
Type the amount, then type a rate or press one of the quick-rate buttons and edit it if you need to.
Read the result
See the amount before GST, the GST and the total, rounded to the cent.
Example: a 110.00 total with 10% GST
Removing 10% GST from 110.00 gives 100.00 before GST and 10.00 of GST. Adding 10% GST to 100.00 gives 110.00 back. Note that the GST inside 110.00 is one eleventh of the total, not 10% of it.
Limits and limitations
- The quick-rate buttons are standard rates as commonly published and may be out of date. Confirm the rate with your tax authority and edit it if it differs.
- Reduced, zero-rated and exempt goods and services are taxed differently. Enter the right rate for what you are selling.
- It handles one rate at a time and does not produce a tax invoice or a business activity statement.
- The result is an estimate for planning, not financial, tax or legal advice. Check the real figures with your lender, adviser or tax authority before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out the GST in a GST-inclusive price?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. At 10% that is the total ÷ 1.1, which gives the price before GST. The GST is the total minus that amount, or one eleventh of the total.
Are the quick rates current?
They are standard rates as commonly published, shown to save typing. Rates change, so always check the current rate with your tax authority.
What is the difference between GST and VAT?
Both are taxes charged on goods and services at each step of supply. GST is the name used in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India, and VAT is used in the UK, the EU and many other places. The maths is the same.
