Tip calculator

%

The extra goes to the tip.

Enter the bill to see the tip and the total.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill and tip

Type the bill before tip and the tip percentage, or press a quick percentage button.

  2. Split it

Enter how many people are sharing. Each share is rounded up to the cent, so the group always covers the bill.

  3. Optional round-up

Tick the box to round the total up to a whole amount. The extra is added to the tip.

Example: an 84.50 bill, 18% tip, 3 people

The tip is 15.21 and the total is 99.71. Split three ways, each person pays 33.24, which comes to 99.72, one cent over the total because each share is rounded up.

Limits and limitations

  • Customs on tipping differ by country and by place, and in some places it is not expected. Use the amount you think is right.
  • The tip is worked out on the bill you enter. If your bill includes tax and you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the pre-tax amount.
  • It splits evenly. It does not divide by who ordered what.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage. A 15% tip on 84.50 is 12.68. The total is the bill plus the tip.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Practice varies. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount. Enter whichever amount you want to base the tip on.

Why does the group pay a cent more than the total?

The total does not always divide evenly. Rounding each share up to the cent guarantees the bill is covered and keeps every share identical.
