Meta Title and Description Checker

Type or paste a page title and meta description to see a preview of a search result, along with the estimated width of each. Search engines cut text by width rather than by character count, so the checker measures width using the letter sizes of Arial, the font used in results. The text stays in your browser.

Check a meta title and description

Only used to draw the preview.

Enter a title or description to see how it may look in search results.

How to use it

  1. Enter the title and description

Type or paste them. Add the page address to draw the address line, and a main keyword if you want to check it appears.

  2. Read the preview

Switch between desktop and mobile. A trailing ellipsis shows where the text is likely to be cut off.

  3. Follow the checks

Each check is labelled Good, Check or Problem. Shorten, reword or move important words earlier, then watch the preview update.

Example: a title that is cut off

A title with 80 characters of mostly narrow letters may fit, while 60 capital letters may not, because width is what counts. Paste both versions here to see where each would be cut and move the important words to the front.

The width limits used

These are commonly observed values, not rules published by search engines, and they can change.

Limits and limitations

  • The preview is an estimate. Google can choose a different title or write its own snippet from the page, and the layout changes from time to time.
  • Widths use Arial letter sizes. Characters outside basic Latin are given an average width, and emoji or East Asian characters are counted as one full em each.
  • The tool checks only the text you enter. It does not fetch your page, so it cannot see what is actually in your HTML.
  • A well-sized snippet does not guarantee a ranking or a higher click rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded?

No. Your title and description is processed by JavaScript running in your browser and is not sent to a server. The page itself still loads from a web server like any website. This site can load advertising or analytics scripts, but only after you accept them in the cookie notice. They are separate from the tools, which never pass the files or text you work with to them.

How long should a meta title be?

There is no fixed number of characters. Titles up to roughly 580 pixels wide, often 50 to 60 characters, usually display in full on desktop. This tool measures the width for you.

Does Google always use my meta description?

No. Google often builds its own snippet from the page text when it thinks that matches a search better. A clear description still gives it a good option to use.

Is the meta keywords tag worth using?

Google does not use the meta keywords tag for ranking, so there is nothing to gain from adding it.
