Product Pricing Calculator

Percentage fees are taken from the price, so adding a margin to your cost is not enough. Enter your costs, fees and the margin you want, and this calculator finds the price that delivers it. It rounds up to the next cent so you are never short.

How to use it

  1. Enter your costs

Type the item cost and any shipping, packaging or other cost you pay per sale.

  2. Enter fees and margin

Add together the percentage fees (marketplace plus payment) and any fixed fee per sale, then type the margin you want as a share of the price.

  3. Read the price

See the price to charge, the fees it pays for and the profit it leaves. The margin is checked against the rounded price.

Example: a 25% margin with 12% fees

Costs 14.00 (9.00 item and 5.00 other), fees of 12% plus 0.30 fixed and a 25% margin. Price = (14.00 + 0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.12 − 0.25) = 22.70. Fees are 3.02, profit is 5.68, and the margin is 25.0%.

Limits and limitations

  • Fees are the rates you type. Marketplaces change their fees, so check them before you list.
  • The margin is on the selling price, not the cost. A 25% margin is a 33.3% markup.
  • If fees plus margin reach 100% no price can work, and the tool says so instead of showing a number.
  • The result is an estimate for planning, not accounting, tax or legal advice. Sales tax, VAT, income tax, currency conversion and returns are not included unless you enter them as a cost.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the price higher than cost plus margin?

Percentage fees are charged on the price. If you add the margin to the cost and then pay 12% of that price in fees, you earn less than you wanted. This tool solves for the price that leaves the margin after fees.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit divided by price. Markup is profit divided by cost. The Profit Margin Calculator on this site converts between them.

Does it include sales tax or VAT?

No. Work out the price before tax and add tax separately, as it is collected for the tax office rather than earned.

Is my pricing uploaded?

No. Your numbers is worked out by JavaScript running in your browser and is not sent to a server. The page itself still loads from a web server like any website.
